What makes commissioned pieces really special is that we take your ideas and needs and produce a unique piece of furniture which is just right for you..
The commissioning process
The first meeting
It is almost essential for a meeting to take place between client and designer. The discussion should lead to a specification covering the main parameters of the design brief and include:
The basic requirement
(is it a table, is it chair?)
Style, size and colour
Materials, wood, glass, ceramics
Budget and timescale
First design proposals
From the initial meeting the designer will draw up a number of sketches, probably on CAD which address the initial brief. These designs should reflect the client’s individual requirements and offer talking points for the next stage. The CAD system used is available free of charge for limited use so you can really explore the design in the comfort and privacy of your owen home.
Distance no object.
Although face to face meetings are best it is not essential With modern means of communication and good carriers I have had successful commissions throughout theUK and even into Europe. Please contact me if you have a "distance" or export project in mind.
Finalising the brief
One or more further meetings will finalise the design parameters. This should be an enjoyable experience for clients as they see their ideas gradually crystallise on the design draft creating beautiful furniture. Once agreement is reached at this stage a payment of around one quarter of the commission price is payable by the client.
During this period the client may, on appointment, visit the workshop to see progress of the piece. If travel is difficult, the client can be emailed photographs of work in progress. It should be kept in mind that around 80% of final appearance of the piece takes place in the last 20% of the time. The important initial stages of timber selection, drying and preparation are very time consuming but with very little to show for all the effort which goes in to them.
Wherever possible I will deliver your furniture personally and install it in the desired place in your home. Where distance makes this unrealistic I will use carefully selected carriers. I will pack the furniture without additional cost and just charge the actual carrier's price.
